研究行為上癮的心理學家馬克 · 格裡菲斯 （Mark Griffiths ）教授認為，真正的 " 性成癮者 " 存在，但沒有那麼多。
有些去性癮診所的名人，只不過是用 " 性癮 " 這個詞來為自己的行為找借口—— " 我犯了錯，是因為我真的無法控制自己 "。" 性癮 " 意味著他是個病人（甚至是受害者），而不是犯罪者或者變態者。有些聲稱自己有 " 性癮 " 的名人，只是因為自己有太多的性機會，於是就順水推舟地接受了，如果沒被抓住，他們可能完全不覺得自己有問題，也不會去主動尋求治療。只是當自己的個人形象和個人品牌深受威脅時，他們才逃到 " 性癮 " 這個擋箭牌下。
