美聯社報導，這起事故發生於下午3時前，這名18歲男子當時與另外3名乘客同乘1輛馬車，馬匹失控後，至少有2名乘客被甩出車廂。
另據法新社報導，紐約警方表示，該名男子“從馬車上跌落後受到重傷”，被送醫後宣告不治。事故的確切經過仍在調查中。
從當地媒體拍攝的畫面可見，1輛白色馬車疑似與另1輛馬車相撞後翻覆。報導並指出，車夫下車後，馬匹疑似受驚逃逸。

這起事故發生的1周前，中央公園才傳出1匹馬因誤食有毒植物死亡，初步解剖結果顯示與中毒有關。
中央公園長期提供馬車載客服務，頗受觀光客歡迎，但也經常遭動物權益團體批評虐待動物。
紐約市長曼達尼（Zohran Mamdani）曾表示，他支持將馬車自中央公園移除。
