检方指，被告是妻子100万美元人寿保险的唯一受益人，形容两人婚姻早已失和。辩方则主张桉件属「突然且无法解释的死亡」。
沃尔什此前已就误导警方及非法处理遗体2项罪名认罪，承认将妻子肢解并弃置于垃圾箱，他辩称是发现妻子死于床上后惊慌失措所为。他另被判证人恐吓罪19至25年、非法弃置遗体罪2至3年，须与终身刑期连续执行。
宣判前，死者胞姊向法庭陈述家人所承受的巨大创伤，表示因无遗体可安葬，家属难以真正哀悼。她说，3名孩子将在没有母亲陪伴下成长，人生每个重要时刻都将感受到缺席的痛楚。目前3名子女由政府监护。
