研究行为上瘾的心理学家马克 · 格里菲斯 （Mark Griffiths ）教授认为，真正的 " 性成瘾者 " 存在，但没有那么多。
有些去性瘾诊所的名人，只不过是用 " 性瘾 " 这个词来为自己的行为找借口—— " 我犯了错，是因为我真的无法控制自己 "。" 性瘾 " 意味着他是个病人（甚至是受害者），而不是犯罪者或者变态者。有些声称自己有 " 性瘾 " 的名人，只是因为自己有太多的性机会，于是就顺水推舟地接受了，如果没被抓住，他们可能完全不觉得自己有问题，也不会去主动寻求治疗。只是当自己的个人形象和个人品牌深受威胁时，他们才逃到 " 性瘾 " 这个挡箭牌下。
