安大略消防局表示，消防人员在当天上午约10点30分接到火警通报。首批到场的消防队发现，在同一片区域的多家商店内出现了多处起火点，情况十分可疑。这些火点随后全部被扑灭。
警方指出，现场接获多起报案称，有一名男子在商场内纵火。执勤警员很快在其中一家店铺内锁定嫌疑人，并将其拘捕。该男子被确认是28岁的路易斯·哈维尔·加列戈斯（Luis Javier Gallegos）。
警方表示，嫌犯在被捕过程中拒绝配合，导致执法人员使用武力控制局面。一名警员受轻伤，嫌犯随后被送往医院治疗，之后被收押，并面临与纵火相关的重罪指控。
