附近郊區裡奇菲爾德（Richfield）的警方表示，據傳現場出現壹名全身黑衣、手持步槍的男子。當地媒體報導，槍擊案發生當下，孩子們正在進行晨間彌撒。
當地電視台的畫面顯示，家長低頭通過黃色警戒線帶學生離校，學生穿著綠色polo衫和藍色短褲及短裙。
