What To Do in Kits This Weekend

1. Khatsahlano Street Party: Saturday
It’s high summer and this is the pinnacle event of the season. The deets: 10 city blocks on West 4th from Burrard to MacDonald. 50 bands giving free shows– genuinely good bands. 8 stages. 40 food trucks. 3 beer gardens. A family zone with family programming. Edgy art shows. 100+ artisan vendors. Don’t miss out. Even if we won’t miss typing Khatsahlano over and over. Read more…

忘了问是这周还是下周,今天要看球。

A 10-block street fair featuring eight stages, 50-plus of Vancouver’s top local musical acts, a mini food-cart fest, a career-retrospective installation art exhibit by Jim “I, Braineater” Cummins and three Mill Street Brewery beer gardens sounds rad.

Add in that the entertainment is all free and it’s easy to understand why over 118,000 people attended last year’s Khatsahlano Street Party.

“I think why it works so well is that we started up with a really simple concept four years ago,” says Grant McDonagh. “What I said to the merchants was, ‘Let’s do something for the excellent local bands who make the city the rest of the year.’”

McDonagh owns and operates Zulu Records. The indie store can lay claim to supporting the local scene for many decades, doing everything from releasing seminal albums such as Slow’s debut to employing countless struggling musicians behind its sales counters. Now the shop curates the music programming, working in partnership with arts programmer Arrival Agency and others.

“Since January, we’ve been working hard on putting it together and it’s really ramped up the last two months,” says McDonagh. “Always with the idea of making a street festival that is unique and, more importantly, really fun.”

From five bands performing in front of Zulu’s store in year one, Khatsahlano has become the most popular single-day neighbourhood festival in the city. It also has become a go-to for one-of-a-kind moments, such as the reuniting of one of the seminal ’60s groups, the Poppy Family.

The Poppy Family Experience features original members singer Susan Jacks, Craig McCaw and Satwant Singh accompanied by members of New Pornographers, Destroyer, Lightning Dust and Black Mountain (TD Stage, 8 p.m.).

McDonagh says Arrival Agency’s Tom Anselmi (coincidentally, also former Slow vocalist) can take the credit for both this historic event and the Planet X: The Underground World of Jim Cummins and I, Braineater taking place between Trafalgar and Stephens streets.

“Tom came up to me and said last year we had 15 artists, next year we just want you,” laughs Cummins. “It’s going to be the full-meal deal with art and music, including a set with Tony Baloney and Phil Western in a mutant Banana Splits kind of thing. I’m bringing my whole meal deal, the complete experience.”

Curiously, for all of Cummins’ intimate connection with the music scene centred out of Zulu, he is always associated with downtown.

“Yeah, but I certainly turned up at a lot of parties and in a lot of bedrooms in the area,” he laughs. “The area is as good as any to let people know what I’m up to, what I’m doing and how the war against all things boring rages on.”

With music classes kicking off at 11:30 a.m. on Saturday morning, not to mention YYoga classes, Fourth Avenue is going to be anything but boring.

The only thing both McDonagh and Cummins stress is don’t come in your car. Parking is beyond premium in the area but buses run regularly.
